Types of siren sounds
- Wailer: the long rising and falling tone used by police cars on the move.
- Whooper and yelp: fast, urgent cycles used when approaching an intersection or in a chase.
- Blipper and short blips: quick bursts used to pull a car over or clear the way.
- High-low siren: the two-tone "nee-naw" sound typical of European police cars and ambulances.
- Distant sirens and city traffic: sirens far away in a downtown ambience, perfect as background for city and crime scenes.
- Police voice clips and station ambience: "This is the police, open up!", police radio and the hum of a police station.
Using siren sounds in videos and games
For a chase scene, start with a distant siren, then cut to a close-up wailer or whooper as the car passes. Use a short blip for comedy, for example right after someone gets "caught" in a prank. For realism in city scenes, keep a distant siren very low in the background.
